CAD (Computer-Aided Design) has become the backbone of modern jewellery manufacturing in India. Every export house and organised manufacturer needs CAD designers — and pay is strong. Here is the practical roadmap.

What does a CAD jewellery designer do?

You convert design ideas — a sketch, a reference photo, a client brief — into precise 3D models that go directly to 3D printing and casting. You handle stone layouts, metal weight optimisation and manufacturing constraints like minimum thickness and prong strength.

Software to learn (in this order)

Rhinoceros (Rhino) — the industry base; learn this first.
Matrix / MatrixGold — the jewellery-specific standard built on Rhino.
JewelCAD — still common in some Indian workshops.
KeyShot — photorealistic renders that win client approvals.
Bonus: ZBrush for organic/carving styles.

Courses and how long it takes

Dedicated jewellery CAD courses in India run 3–6 months. Institutes exist in Mumbai, Surat, Jaipur, Delhi and Kolkata; online options work too if you practice daily. Expect 6–12 months from starting to being job-ready. A degree is not required — your portfolio is your degree.

Building a portfolio that gets hired

10–15 finished models: rings, earrings, pendants, at least one bridal set.
Show both the CAD wireframe and the rendered image for each piece.
Include one manufacturing-ready piece with correct weights and stone sizes.

Salary expectations (2026)

Fresher CAD designers start at ₹15,000–₹25,000/month. With 2–4 years and Matrix expertise, ₹35,000–₹50,000 is common in Mumbai and Surat export houses. Senior designers and team leads cross ₹60,000–₹80,000. Freelancing per-design adds side income once you are established.
