Goldsmith Salary in India 2026: City-by-City Guide

A goldsmith's pay in India is not one number. It moves with the city, the metal you work in, and whether you are on a monthly wage or per-piece rates.

What decides your pay

Three things, in this order: the work you can finish without supervision, your speed, and your wastage. A karigar who returns clean weight every month is worth more than one who is faster but loses metal.

City by city

Surat — the diamond and CAD capital. Bench work and setting pay well because the volume is high. Mumbai (Zaveri Bazaar) — the widest range. Antique and bridal specialists earn the most. Jaipur — kundan, meenakari and jadau. Traditional skills carry a premium here that they do not elsewhere. Kolkata (Bowbazar) — filigree and light-weight gold. Known for fine handwork. Coimbatore and Thrissur — South Indian temple jewellery and casting units.

How to move up a bracket

Learn a second skill next to your main one. A polisher who can also set stones, or a karigar who can read a CAD file, moves out of the general pool immediately.

Ask before you accept

Is it monthly or per piece? Who bears wastage? Is there PF and ESIC? Is accommodation included? These four questions change the real value of an offer more than the headline figure.
